Beth and I took our new fat-tire eBikes up to Altadena to meet Spyros and ride Rail Trail #35 from Best Rail Trails California. The combination of a warm day and steep climbs wore on my body’s thermal regulation and also took a toll on Beth’s electric assist.
Spy met us at Loma Alta Drive and Chaney Trail, and then we pushed our way up Chaney Trail, along Mt Lowe Rd, and then onto the old railway. At one point, we got to see the Pasadena Fire Department training their mountain-rescue skills. Lots of climbing along the rocky railbed got Spy and me to Mt Lowe Campground, but Beth had to cut her climb short to preserve her motor.
My battery was nearly spent, but the return trip was nearly all downhill, so I was not too concerned. On the way back, Spy pedaled the spur trail out to Echo Mountain while we waited for him at the intersection. He headed home after that, and Beth and I stopped for lunch in Farnsworth Park.
